Games and Playable Media

people at gaming monitorIn IMM, we view playable media as an important form of expression and a 21st-century vehicle for the Liberal Arts. We recognize that games have the _IMM Areas of Study 2023.docxpotential to connect all corners of our campus and engage many disciplines: art, programming, writing, design, music, and more. Here, you will be challenged to design games and apply them to a range of goals and situations, from interrogating real-world problems to spreading joy through playful social experiences. Along the way, you’ll learn how to work with professional game development tools, build individual and team projects, and cultivate essential prototyping and play testing habits through a play-centric design process.

Practically speaking, what this means is that we consider our audience and design playable media that includes users in the process throughout, no matter what screen (or no screen) that we design for. This area of study has been consistently recognized nationally for excellence, including a 2019 national ranking among the top 25 schools that offer a Bachelor of Arts in Game Design and the top 3 programs in New Jersey, according to the Animation Career Review.
