Production Editor (Remote option) Princeton University Press (PUP) seeks a skilled individual who is process and detail-oriented, and possesses a passion for books, academia, and publishing. Reporting to the Assistant Managing Editor, the Production Editor is responsible for overseeing the process of book production from unedited manuscript through final product. The ability to facilitate the practical job of supervising the work of freelance copyeditors and indexers, etc., while keeping projects on track both financially and schedule-wise, but also to be able to engage in more subtle work of balancing the needs of the author with those of the Press, while maintaining good relations with all participants in a project is essential to success in this position. This is a full-time position with comprehensive benefits and can be 100% remote or hybrid.

 

Core Responsibilities:

• Reviews, learns, and follows Production Editorial processes in order to apply department procedures to job tasks, ensuring consistency among production editors; has a working familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style and in-house style rules.

• Handles a yearly workload of titles of various levels of time-sensitivity and complexity, taking them from raw manuscript to final product. • Coordinates and organizes all traffic relevant to the production of each book, prioritizes workload, and maintains strict deadlines.

• Acts as liaison to authors, other Production staff, and members of other departments throughout the Press, maintaining open lines of communication on all levels throughout the production process.

• Attends meetings, as necessary, to discuss editorial, design, marketing, and schedule specifics of assigned titles. • Prepares new projects for production, ensuring that copyediting, design, permissions, and manufacturing issues are addressed before production begins.

• Adjusts and re-strategizes production schedules in PUP’s Biblio database software as changes are required. • Creates art log and submits art to the Illustration Manager for his review; works closely with Illustration Manager or vendor on tracking art submissions and maintaining predetermined quality levels.

• Conveys detailed information to the designer concerning the range and complexity of design elements for books and their art programs. Applies design styles to manuscripts.

• Assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of freelance copyeditors; maintains cost-effective quality control of the process. • Reviews permissions log approved by IP department, confirms that required credit language appears in the appropriate places in the book, and alerts Editorial if additional permissions appear to be needed.

• Manages all stages of proof, resolving any problems that arise:

o Sends page proof to author for proofreading and indexing.

o Checks multiple rounds of page proof for editorial issues (reviews all corrections, resolves queries, edits index).

o When applicable: arranges for and manages the work of freelance proofreader and indexer.

• Reviews jacket and/or cover copy through printer proofs, binding die, and catalog.

Position Requirements:

• A degree from a 4-year college or university plus a minimum of 2 years of experience in scholarly publishing (internships included).

• A combination of equivalent education and work experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

• Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, a sharp eye for detail, and an exceptional ability to organize workflow and anticipate and solve problems.

• Ability to work independently and manage a multitude of tasks and ever-changing priorities within strict deadlines.

• Ability to adapt to frequently changing technologies and procedures.

• Ability to establish, develop, and maintain high functioning working relationships with authors, in-house staff, and freelancers.

• Ability to maintain, and operate from, a perspective that encompasses the entire mission of the Press.

• Basic computer skills such as Acrobat, Word, Excel, Access, and Biblio. A working knowledge of on-screen editing is essential.

While the Princeton, NJ office is currently closed due to the pandemic, once the office reopens, interested candidates who prefer to work on-site will be able to work from the Press’s NJ office for networking and professional development. Flexibility with in-office days will be permitted as the Press supports hybrid work. Base Salary: $46,000/year plus a comprehensive benefits package.
